My Quest for the World Triathlon Championships
Who am I?
My name is Emma Scott and I live with my husband and 3 children of 14, 13, and 11, in Calne. I work full time as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner currently serving the local military population. I belong to Calne Smartt Running and Triathlon Club and have been with them since 2010. I have not always been a runner as I spent most of my youth juggling gymnastics and ballet. When I became too old for gymnastics, I took up marathon and ultra-running, and more recently in the last 5 years, Triathlon.
I love a challenge, and this year I have been given the opportunity to try for my greatest one yet, by qualifying for the World Triathlon Long Distance Triathlon championships and the European Middle Distance Championships. I would normally choose to raise money for charities that are close to my heart, Dorothy House, Alzheimer’s Disease, Breast Cancer and Wiltshire Air Ambulance, however, this time, I am aiming to reach my dream to represent Great Britain.
What are the World Triathlon Championships?
This is the pinnacle of non-professional Triathlon championships, and a chance to compete for Great Britain amidst other world class triathletes from around the globe. The World Championships, to be held at Pontevedra, Spain on May 4th, 2019. The exact distances have not been finalised, but the race will consist of a 2 to 2.4-mile swim in the Lerez river, 100-110-mile bike ride around the Galicia rolling hills and mountains, and lastly a 18-26 mile run in the city centre of Pontevedra.
What will I gain from this opportunity?
I hope to gain an overwhelming sense of achievement, honour and pride in competing for Great Britain and that I may inspire others by acting as a positive role model for my children, the local community and the trainee military population I care for and hopefully further support for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
I also hope that this will give me an inner confidence and strength to help fight my own battles with mental health.
As with must goals it is also a collection of emotional and irrational fears and wants – the need to prove something to myself and to others; the desire to conquer my own personal Mt Everest; the silent healthy competition with my husband who has qualified for the World Championship Sprints in Switzerland in August 2019; the emotional motivator of having a purpose; a plan to follow, and the challenge of juggling the balls of life successfully.
What I can hopefully do for any contributors?
Updates on highs and lows of my journey to the World Championships, mentions on Facebook and Instagram with hyperlinks to your business if desired, possibilities for local advertising through a local newspaper article, and the opportunity to discuss having your business logos on my training kit.
